Nobody (2021) received great reviews. It was released at the time when Better Call Saul was doing well. Bob Odenkirk’s role as an unassuming average Joe who transforms into this angry vengeful vigilante caught everyone by surprise. The unfiltered violence filled the void between two releases of John Wick. If not for the ending where Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) burns down piles of money, it was a neatly wrapped up movie. Then, they had to go and make a sequel.

Much later, Hutch is paying off the debt by being the hit man for the Russians. He gets his jobs from the Barber. The tasks are messy, repetitive and hardly make a dent to the amount owed to the Russians. Frustrated, he decides-to take a vacation to the place his father took him and his brother when they were kids – Plummerville. “Let’s go to the carnival,” says he,” I’ll book us the fancy hotel”.

Ominously, we are told that trouble follows Hutch, and it does. A small fight, at the arcade center sets off a chain of events bringing in the big guns that have the local mafia shaking in their boots. Hutch lines up his father, brother and the local drug lord for the final showdown with Lendina (Sharon Stone). For all the build up around Lendina’s ruthlessness, the final boss fight, was rather tame.

We must address the choice of-name Lendina. Of all the names that could evoke terror they and fear – a name that, went along with the ruthless action we see on the screen, Lendina is probably the worst. It seems like something that was pulled out of a pile of discarded names. The story benefits from a lot of coincidences. Hutch happens to be at the same place when the local don’s son is kidnapped. This allows Hutch to join forces and get the guns he needs for the showdown. His wife Becca knows the exact time and place to show up to fight Lendina.

I definitely wouldn’t watch the next installment. It is repetitive and this trope of movies has become over-saturated. Like the John Wick universe, the ability to know inner details of local bad guys with a phone call is unbelievable. Is there an IMDb equivalent for the underworld? Hutch’s demeanour as a frustrated middle aged man who could snap and take out villains was unique in the first movie. It is tiring the second time around.

Watch if you are a fan of in-your face violence and have time to kill.
